Appleby Castle
Appleby Castle is a spectacular motte and bailey castle with one of the few remaining intact Norman keeps. It dates back to an earthwork fortification in the 9th century and the keep was probably built in the early 11th century. It was once held by the Kings of England and, when the North was invaded and occupied by the Scots it was held for a time by the Kings of Scotland. Lady Anne Clifford, who owned Brough Castle amongst others, and for whom our top luxury suite is named, also resided there. Closed for many years it is now open again to the public.
